Workshop Description:

Research tells us that SEL instruction makes a difference in student academic and behavioral outcomes, but what makes some SEL instruction more effective than others? One of the most important keys to effective SEL skill development is infusing SEL instruction into existing curriculum throughout the school day. Since social-emotional learning skills by nature rely heavily on communication skills, literacy is a natural vehicle for SEL instruction, practice, and expression, regardless of grade level and content area.

Increase your knowledge of SEL pedagogy and practice through a hands-on experience with a variety of literacy tools (both fiction and non-fiction) at different grade levels. Explore how literacy and embedded trauma-sensitive strategies can support social-emotional growth in students of diverse backgrounds and experiences. Learn how you can utilize any form of literacy into your instruction to support SEL skill development, as well as increase reading and writing skills.

Workshop Objectives:

Learners will…

  • Explain why SEL integration is important to SEL skill development effectiveness.
  • Consider how trauma-sensitive strategies can be utilized through SEL instruction to enhance effectiveness.
  • Explore how literacy of all kinds can be used in any grade level or content area to support SEL skill development.
  • Utilize a variety of literacy resources as a vehicle to teach, practice, and express social-emotional learning skills.
